Iranian regime expert: JCPOA is a cage for our diplomats

Iran, Aug. 11, 2019 – In an interview with the Resalat newspaper, Mohammad Sadegh Koushaki, a so-called expert with ties to the Iranian regime, lamented about the inefficiency of the nuclear deal (JCPOA).

"[Iranian regime President Hassan] Rouhani and his supporters insisted this was a national project. We must take note that this agreement was a sort of suicide… we were fearing the consequences of confronting the U.S. and Europe, and unfortunately, we destroyed our nuclear capacity with our own hands… This severely damaged our country, and in some cases, the damage is irreversible. All of this has happened while we haven't received anything in exchange. The only outcome of the JCPOA was that our foreign minister has become imprisoned [has become limited in his functions due to sanctions], and Iranian diplomats in New York are limited in a 1,000-meter cage," he said.

"The Europeans are attempting to maintain Iran in the context of JCPOA and this issue is completely understandable since they gained extensively from the JCPOA and placed Iran under 8-, 15- and 25-year nuclear limits. In some cases, even more. This is why the Europeans are inclined to keep these huge gains for an unlimited period,” Koushaki continued.

"Contrary to the Europeans, the Americans aim to force Iran to submit to JCPOA 2 and 3. The Europeans also want to force Iran to a second and third JCPOA, but their difference with the U.S. is that they also want to preserve the original JCPOA in addition to the second and third version. Meanwhile, the Americans say that the first JCPOA has been put behind and we must move to the next steps.

"While there are differences between the two, Europe and the U.S. have no conflict of interests on strategic matters, and they both want to continue imposing the JCPOA's nuclear restrictions on Iran."

Regarding telephone conversations between Rouhani and French President Emmanuel Macron, Koushki said, "[France] is attempting to transform the JCPOA into a cage which Iran will enter at its own will, imprison itself and hand over the key to its cell to the Europeans and Americans."
