Iran coronavirus update: Over 499,200 deaths, officials expecting death toll rise

Over 499,200 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Friday afternoon local time, January 21. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 132,172, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 116,585 in Tehran, 34,610 in Isfahan, 18,105 in Mazandaran, 17,290 in Gilan, 16,495 in Lorestan, 10,845 in Golestan, 8247 in Kurdistan, 6408 in North Khorasan, and 6365 in Ardabil. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Friday as 20 deaths and 5276 new cases. Furthermore, 1228 patients are in ICUs and 383 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“We should not wait for a crisis to take shape and then seek to prevent it. From this day forward the number of Covid-19 cases will increases gradually and it is related to the omicron variant. In the coming three weeks omicron will become the main variant across the globe, including Iran. We expect to see a sixth wave begin in late February and March, with the death toll also rising,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force Scientific Committee on Friday, according to the state-run Aftab News outlet.

In around three to four weeks we will witness the peak. When the number of omicron cases increases, it is possible to see a rise in the death toll from this variant,” said Minoo Mohraz, a senior member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday, according to the state-run Andisheye Moaser outlet.”


“With 80 coronavirus patients hospitalized in the past 24 hours, we currently have 362 hospitalized patients, of which 50 patients are in ICUs,” according to a statement released on Friday by the Shiraz Medical Sciences University regarding Fars province.

“The coronavirus colorization of some areas in Qom province has changed from yellow to orange. This is the situation in villages and various counties. Therefore, we need to be careful,” said the deputy dean of Qom Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the state-run Khabar Online outlet.

“In the past 24 hours, 343 coronavirus patients have been registered in various health centers,” according to a statement released by the Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Friday.
