Iran coronavirus update: Over 496,800 deaths, parliament seeks to impeach health minister

Over 496,800 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Tuesday afternoon local time, January 11. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,940, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 116,080 in Tehran, 40,035 in Razavi Khorasan, 17,235 in Gilan, 16,430 in Lorestan, 13,402 in Kerman, 9299 in Kermanshah, 8223 in Yazd, 5834 in Qavin, and 4775 in Zanjan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Tuesday as 25 deaths and 1961 new cases. Furthermore, 1619 patients are in ICUs and 292 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“Many of the patients currently hospitalized and even in ICUs have contracted omicron. Twenty-seven percent of last week’s tests were omicron related. When there is such an increase in the span of one week, it can reach its own peak in the next few weeks. Therefore, the suggestion placed forward by the Scientific Committee is for hesitance regarding the reopening of schools, universities, and other gatherings such as concerts and… for at least the next few weeks,” said the secretary of the National Covid-19 Task Force Scientific Committee on Tuesday, according to the state-run Fararu website.

“One of our dilemmas since the beginning of this pandemic is the shortage of tests. We are not conducting many tests. Many of our tests are known as rapid tests and they’re not registered anywhere,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force Scientific Committee on Tuesday, according to the semi-official ILNA news agency.

“We have a new wave in the making. We haven’t had a more effective vaccination campaign than Europe. Engaging with omicron and the start of a new wave is the determined fate of all countries,” said another member of the National Covid-19 Task Force Scientific Committee on Tuesday, according to the state-run Jomhouri Eslami daily.

“The health minister said he had received an Iranian vaccine. However, it was revealed later that he had received a foreign vaccine. During this period a bill has been put forward to impeach the health minister. Many important and sensitive issues have been raised about him that may be even more important than the issues raised in the impeachment bill,” said a member of the regime’s Majlis (parliament) on Tuesday, according to the state-run Eghtesad News outlet.

“The threat of omicron is right around the corner for Kermanshah locals. Twelve cases have been identified and most certainly the number of cases is more than this,” according to a statement released on Tuesday by the Kermanshah Medical Sciences University.

The threat of omicron and its spread on a wide scale is quite near in Sistan & Baluchistan province in southeast Iran, according to a Tuesday report released by the regime’s official IRIB news agency.
