Firing of Arman-e Vahdat employees triggers demonstrations

Reported by PMOI/MEK

Iran, Jan. 5, 2019 – On Friday, the employees of Arman-e Vahdat (Ta’avoni Vahdat) in Ahvaz gathered in front of the governor’s office of Khuzestan province and held demonstrations in protest to the firing of 1,300 former employees of the credit institution.

The order of letting go the employees was given by the CEO of Melal Institution, the financial body that acquired Vahdat after the credit institution was dissolved under the order of the Central Bank last year. Vahdat is one of the several state-approved credit institutions that was involved in large-scale embezzlement and theft of investor money.

The employees of this institution had held a similar demonstration on Monday to protest to the firing of their colleagues.

One of the employees of Vahdat said, “Since last June, when the financial institution ran into trouble and was dissolved by the Central Bank, the settling of debts was being finalized by the employees. As soon as the debts were settled, the authorities of Melal declared they no longer need this workforce.”

“The employees want to settle their work status and return to work,” he said, adding that the employees are still waiting for two months’ worth of unpaid wages. “They want their overdue wages.”

Last year, the Central Bank ordered the dissolution of Arman-e Vahdat on charges of not having a legal permit. The institution was subsequently merged into Melal. One of Vahdat’s 38 branches was in Ahvaz, Khuzestan.
