Iran coronavirus update: Over 492,700 deaths, omicron spreading for some time now

Over 492,700 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 547 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Monday afternoon local time, December 27. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 131,434, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 115,250 in Tehran, 34,005 in Isfahan, 18,580 in Fars, 18,573 in West Azerbaijan, 17,033 in East Azerbaijan, 14,408 in Alborz, 13,270 in Qom, 8968 in Markazi (Central), 6505 in Semnan, 5759 in Qazvin, and 5489 in Bushehr. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

The regime’s Health Ministry announced the mullahs’ engineered Covid-19 numbers from the past 24 hours on Monday as 34 deaths and 1967 new cases. Furthermore, 2766 patients are in ICUs and 344 of the new cases have been hospitalized.

“We expect the spread of omicron to be extremely fast. We need to intensify our measures as we speak and not wait until the numbers of people seeking medical care, those being hospitalized, and the death count to rise and then make decisions. In the past fifth wave, we never had ‘preventive’ measures to its true meaning to prevent peaks. Each time we delayed action to such an extent that the number of those hospitalized and the death count rose, and then took measures,” said a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Monday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“Omicron cases have been identified in the five cities of Tehran, Mashhad, Babol, Isfahan, and Hormozgan,” said the head of the Health Ministry’s Infectious Disease Center on Monday, according to state TV.

“Omicron is threatening children in Mashhad. Most of these children were infected in schools. From the very beginning, we did not agree with reopening schools. Most of the children seeking medical care contracted the virus in schools,” said a senior health official of Mashhad’s Akbar Hospital in Razavi Khorasan province on Monday, according to the state-run Eghtesad News outlet.

“During the past week the three indexes of those hospitalized, in ICUs, and the death toll saw increases. In the cities of Bashagerd, Parsian, Bandar Khomeir, Haji-Abad, Qeshm, and Bastak we witnessed an increase in the number of positive test results,” said the spokesperson of Hormozgan Medical Sciences University on Monday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The threat of omicron’s spread is serious. Omicron spreads faster and more aggressively in comparison to all previous variants, and its infectious rate being many times higher than the delta variant,” according to a statement released by the Ardabil Medical Sciences University on Monday.

“The spread of coronavirus and the new variant is evaluated as more critical and serious. When the entrance of omicron into the country was announced, the variant was actually spreading prior to that, and signs of the cold or slight cases of influenza among students and teachers, and their families were witnessed. Despite the warnings regarding the new variant entering the country, this issue was constantly denied,” according to a piece published on Monday in the state-run Hamdlei daily.
