Why the world should stand with the people of Iran

Analysis by PMOI/MEK

Feb. 11, 2019 – Today marks the 40th anniversary of the 1979 Revolution of Iran. 40 years ago on this day, the people of Iran finally toppled the dictatorship of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi after months of protests and confrontations with security forces. But the achievements of the sacrifices the Iranian people had made in the streets of Iran were hijacked by the brutal regime of Khomeini, who established a rule of Islamic fundamentalism, misogyny, and terrorism.

In the past four decades, the mullahs’ regime has executed hundreds of thousands of Iranians and destroyed the lives of millions of others through corruption and mismanagement of the country’s economy. The regime has squandered the country’s wealth and assets to spread terrorism, sectarianism and Islamic fundamentalism to the neighboring countries and across the globe, and to build weapons of mass destruction to guarantee its own existence.

The question now is, after 40 years of terror and violence under the rule of the mullahs, what do the people of Iran want. That question was clearly answered on February 8, in a demonstration by a large crowd of Iranians in Paris, gathered to echo the voices of their compatriots who have been demonstrating for their most basic rights in the past 13 months.

The demonstrators, who gathered at the Place Denfert-Rochereau and ended their march in front of the French National Assembly, made it clear that the only solution to the problems of the Iranian people is the toppling of the mullahs’ regime, a cry that has been echoed across Iran in the past year.

“[The people of Iran] expect the international community to respect their struggle and recognize their high goal of liberating Iran and the entire world from the evil and mischief of the mullahs’ religious fascism,” said Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), in her televised speech to the gathering.

Mrs. Rajavi also reminded in her speech that Western governments’ policy of appeasement toward Tehran has so far aided and abetted the Iranian regime in avoiding its inevitable collapse and toppling at the hands of the Iranian people. In the past two decades, the general approach of western governments has been to contain the threats posed by the Iranian regime by giving it concessions at the expense of the Iranian people and their organized opposition movement PMOI/MEK.

From turning a blind eye on the protests and just demands of the Iranian people to designating the MEK as a terrorist organization, western governments had done everything they could to curry favor with the mullahs ruling Iran. But to their dismay, not only has that policy not resulted in changing the behavior of the brutal regime ruling Iran, but it has now brought the state-backed terrorism of the mullahs within their own borders.

“Our question to those who are still persisting in their worn-out policy of appeasement of the mullahs is, ‘why do you want to prolong the suffering of the people of Iran and other nations in the region? Is it not enough? Indeed, what does it take for you to learn your lessons from the mullahs’ savage terrorism in recent months in the heart of Europe and in the U.S.?” Mrs. Rajavi said.

In the past year, the Iranian regime’s increased terrorist and espionage activities in European countries has raised concerns among European politicians and has resulted in limited measures by European authorities against some Iranian officials and entities.

Mrs. Rajavi stressed that recognizing the right of the Iranian people to resist against this regime will be key to restoring freedom in Iran and achieving peace and stability in the Middle East and across the world.

A good place to start is for the U.S. and EU to designate the Iranian regime’s Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS) and Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) and all their affiliates and front organizations as terrorist entities and to impose the severest sanctions on them. These are two of the main entities that are propping up the tyrannical rule of the mullahs. By handicapping them, the international community will deprive the Iranian regime of two important implements it has used to suppress protests and dissidents inside Iran and spread terrorism and fundamentalism across the world.

“The Iranian people and Resistance do not want this regime to have any bullets, or sell any barrel of oil, or spend a single dollar of the Iranian nation’s wealth on suppression and terrorism,” Mrs. Rajavi said. “The objective of the Iranian people and their Resistance is to overthrow the regime in its entirety. The goal is freedom, democracy, and the sovereignty of our people’s republic.”

Mrs. Rajavi’s remarks were echoed by other speakers at the event, including politicians from Europe and the Middle East.

“All European governments, open your eyes. Restore the dignity of your countries. Support the Iranian Resistance. Stop following your economic interests at the expense of your dignity,” said former French Senator Jean-Pierre Michel. “Support the people who are fighting for democracy in the streets of Iran. There’s an alternative for Iran. It must be supported. Tomorrow, we will be in a free Iran.”

“The Iranian regime is serious in saying the movement led by Mrs. Rajavi is a real threat to its rule. The Iranian regime has escalated its terrorist activities, its support of terrorist groups in the Middle East and its development of ballistic missiles,” said former European Parliament Vice-President Alejo Vidal-Quadras.

The European Union must once and for all put an end to its appeasement policy and support the Iranian Resistance by blacklisting the entire MOIS and IRGC, Vidal-Quadras said. “I’m very hopeful that we will soon see the end of the mullahs’ regime.”

The Feb 8 demonstration, held at the cusp of the 40th anniversary of the 1979 revolution, was the manifestation of the will of the Iranian people who are fed up with four decades of tyranny and terrorism. The Iranian people have spoken their desire and will. It is regime change. It is now up to the international community to make its move.
