Parliamentary advisor threatens U.S. over arrests of Iranian regime TV anchor

Jan. 19, 2019 – In reaction to the arrest of an Iranian regime TV anchor in the U.S., Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Directory General for International Affairs of the Iranian regime’s Majlis (Parliament), resorted to threatening American authorities, saying, “If this reporter is not released, this will not be the endgame for the U.S.”

Regarding Marzieh Hashemi, the so-called reporter who was arrested last week as she had traveled to the U.S., Fars News Agency, a media outlet owned by the Revolutionary Guards, ridiculously claimed, “[Hashemi] is an independent reporter who creates documentaries. In 2009, she had taken footage from the location Neda Agha Soltan was murdered and her research proved that the MEK had killed her.”

Neda Agha Soltan was an Iranian women who took part in the 2009 uprisings that followed the rigged presidential elections. Agha Soltan was shot dead in the streets of Tehran by security forces. The footage of her death was captured and vastly shared on social media, and became one of the defining pictures of the event and a undeniable evidence of the savagery of Iranian security forces. Hashemi, the reporter in question, helped create a forged documentary that lay the blame for her death on the MEK.

Hashemi, nee Melanie Franklin in New Orleans, changed her name and moved to Iran after marrying an Iranian man. She has since played an important role in the Iranian regime’s propaganda machine through its English-speaking media outlet Press TV.

In 2012, Press TV was banned in the UK because it had aired an interview with an Iranian political prisoner that had been obtained under torture and threats.

U.S. authorities have declared that Hashemi has been detained to testify on a criminal case. Iranian regime officials including foreign minister Javad Zarif, have called the measure a violation of freedom of expression and have called for the immediate release of Hashemi.

Interestingly, the Iranian regime is notoriously renowned for the unjustified arrest of foreign nationals as bargaining chips and tools to exert political pressure on their countries of origin. At present, the Iranian regime is holding several American and British nationals hostage in its prisons under trumped up and vague national security charges.
