Government unable to tackle ’vice’, Iran MP

Iran Focus, Tehran, May 18 – The chair of the delegation of Majlis (Parliament) deputies from East Azerbaijan Province, northwest Iran, Gholam-Hossein Massoudi-Rayhan, on Sunday said: ’The State Security Force (SSF) cannot single handedly deal with the spread of vice in society, which has contaminated different sectors like a virus.’

Claiming that the country’s educational system is to blame for social problems such as drug addiction, Massoudi-Rayhan added: ’At present, it is not clear what kind of people the educational system wants to bring up. It lacks clear and specific objectives. It is apparently focusing on educating weak and introverted persons, which will result in the upbringing of only weak and incapable people in the future.’

Massoudi expressed alarm that universities and high schools have failed to enact more restrictive policies and guidelines to complement the work of the SSF to bring students and families in line with state policy, leading to the demoralisation of security forces and supporters of the Islamic Republic. ’The more we ignore the dignity of human beings in society, universities, high school and households, the more social vice, especially drug addiction, will spread,’ he said.

The deputy from the town of Ahar charged that ’when a young man with bachelors or masters degree cannot find proper employment, his hopes for a future are dashed and he has to wander around unemployed for many years and ask for handouts from his parents. This is how social vice begins to take shape.’
