130,000 people have fled Eastern Ghouta – UN

Orient Net, 3 April 2018— At least 130,000 people have left Eastern Ghouta, as the airstrikes by Assad’s regime and Russia still continue, United Nations says.

Stephen Dujarric, spokesman for the UN General Secretary says several aid agencies are trying to address the basic needs of displaced people, but warned the level of the needs is increasing rapidly as more people are leaving Eastern Ghouta.

He has urged international aid organizations to help the displaced families, who are living in temporary tents or relative’s houses.

“The UN continues to call for safe, unimpeded and sustained access to all in need, and any evacuation of civilians must be safe, voluntary, and to a place of their choosing,” he said. “It is imperative that civilians have the right of return as soon as the situation allows,” said Dujarric.

Thousands of civilians have been killed in Eastern Ghouta, a region, once with 400,000 population, besieged by Assad’s regime.

Syria’s regime, backed by Russia, has conducted hundreds of airstrikes in Eastern Ghouta, which has been under the control of the Syrian opposition forces for years.
