Ghouta assault: Russian airstrikes kill 20 civilians

Orient Net, Mar 1, 2018— Assad regime, backed by Russian air force, resumed assault against towns and cities of eastern Ghouta in attempt to reclaim territories in the area, killing and injuring a number of civilians.

Orient News correspondents, said 20 civilians, including a child, were killed (5 in Douma, 1 in Saqba, 1 in Al-Marj, 3 Hammouriya, 1 in Bait Sawa, 3 in al-Shifoniyah and 3 in Kafarbatna), and several others were injured, according to initial reports, as aircraft targeted Ghouta towns and cities with multiple airstrikes.

Syria Civil Defense rescue group said a volunteer rescuer was killed and an ambulance was destroyed from regime attacks today.

In the meantime, Assad militias implemented regular infiltration attempts on Hazrama, al-Nashabiyah and Hawash al-Dawahira battlefronts, but were repelled by Ghouta opposition fighters, our correspondent reported.

Assad regime, and its allies, Russia and Iran, have escalated attacks on the besieged eastern Ghouta in the suburbs of Damascus since Feb. 19, in one of the fiercest assaults in Syria’s war where more than 500 civilians have lost their lives.

The UN Security Council, including Assad’s strongest ally Russia, passed a resolution on Saturday calling for a 30-day countrywide ceasefire. But the measure has not taken effect, with regime’s ongoing assaults against opposition-held areas in Syria.

Russia claimed five-hour daily truces in eastern Ghouta, to allow residents to leave and aid to enter the enclave through what it describes as a humanitarian corridor, but no civilians left, and no aid was delivered with regime militias ongoing attacks against the area.
