Libyan army says agreement to unify military institution to be signed soon

Al Arabiya, 15 February 2018 – Libya’s armed forces spokesperson, Colonel Ahmed al-Mesmari, said that discussions aimed at unifying Libya’s military institution will continue in Cairo on Thursday, adding that most clauses were agreed upon in a draft agreement which will be signed soon.

The agreement is sponsored by Egypt, and will be a stepping stone towards unifying the country’s military, al-Mesmari said.

The second stage will be the signing of the document which was drafted by the different Libyan parties in previous discussions, the last of which was held in November.

These meetings between Libya’s military factions, which started a year ago in Egypt, aim to place a strategy to unify the split army institution made up of a faction loyal to the House of Representatives in Tobruk led by Khalifa Haftar, and the other which is loyal to the internationally recognized government of reconciliation based in Tripoli west of the country.

There is still a lot of speculation about the success of the agreement’s signing, especially with regard to article eight, which is about military and government sovereignty in the country.
