International Federation for Human Rights asked Iraq for immediate release of 36 Ashraf residents

Following restrain of the Iraqi government to implement the third verdict of the court regarding release of 36 Ashraf residents taken hostage by the Iraqi government, the International Federation for Human Rights sent an immediate letter to the Iraqi Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and the President of Supreme Court and asked for immediate release of the 36 detainees.

The text of the letter is as follows:

Paris, 30th September 2009

Your Excellencies,
We are writing to you regarding the situation of the members of the People’s Mojahedeen
Organization of Iran (PMOI) currently based in Camp Ashraf, in Iraq, and especially the situation of 36 persons which have been arrested after the Iraqi army entered by force in the Camp on July 28th, 2009.

We have learnt this morning that a tribunal has issued for the third time a judgment ordering the release of these 36 persons who are detained in the city of Khalis, but that the police has not
implemented this decision.

We recall that these detainees are pursuing a hunger strike for 63 days and that they are in a very preoccupying health condition.

We therefore call upon you to give the order to implement the judgement ordering their release
without further delay.

In view of the urgency of the situation on the ground, FIDH hopes that you will take the present
concerns into consideration as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely,
Souhayr Belhassen
President
