UN approves resolution on Palestinians’ right of self-determination

NEW YORK, Dec 21 (KUNA) — The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) approved a resolution on the Palestinian people’s right for self-determination and the right to have Palestine as their own independent state.
The resolution was backed by 176 countries, opposed by seven others including the US, Canada and Israel, while four countries refrained from voting In this matter, the UNGA pointed to the resolution of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued in 2004, stating that all nations have the freedom to determine their own fate.

ICJ also opposed Israel’s building of the separation wall on Palestinian territories, including the West Bank, saying it violates the right of self-determination for Palestinians.
Meanwhile, UNGA called for an immediate end to the Israeli occupation that started in 1967 and to execute the UN’s terms and resolutions for both sides.

The resolution came shortly after the US vetoed an Egyptian-drafted Security council resolution calling to declare President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital or alter the character or demographics of the holy city “null and void”. (end) asf.ag
