36 Iraqi Parliamentarians asked head of judiciary power for immediate release of 36 residents of Ashraf

36 Members of Iraqi Parliament from various factions in a letter to Medhat Mahmoud, President of the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq, underscored the need for immediate release of 36 residents of Ashraf and wrote that these individuals have been kept in prison in violation to the court’s ruling and the law. They are on their 50th day of hunger strike and on the brink of death. These 36 individuals were arrested in the course of inhuman attack of July 28 against Camp Ashraf that left 11 killed and 500 wounded.
Na’eb Hessam abdul-Kaarim al-Azzawi, who declared this parliamentary measure, reiterated that refraining from releasing the 36 individuals and using this lever for political pressures is against Iraqi laws, culture and values and violates various international laws and conventions according to which these individuals are considered as “protected”.
The letter of parliamentarians to Medhat Mahmoud reads: “36 individuals who are in Khalis prison are regarded hostages by many international sides because of the way they were arrested and beaten and also because of being held in prison after the court ruled to their freedom. … Iraq’s judiciary prestige should not be allowed to be tainted with political pressures and interests and foreign pressures. Illegal claims that they entered Iraq unlawfully 25 years ago is not understandable by any means and has no intention other than continuing their illegal detention and will end with a new painful human rights violation.”
In another measure this week, 15 other parliamentarians called for immediate release of the 36 prisoners in Khalis prison.
