Yemen President: Houthi Militias Are Iranian Proxies Targeting Saudi Stability

Asharq Al-Awsat, 26 October, 2017— Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi said on Thursday that Iran is exclusively using coup militias in Yemen for their regional proxy war, hoping to destabilize the security and stability of neighboring countries, specifically the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“Iran is seeking to form a new Hezbollah on the borders of the kingdom with its support of Houthi militias,” President Hadi said during a meeting with his government officials.

He labeled the Iranian interference as unfair to the Yemenis in the sole interest of Tehran.

“Coup militias imposed an unjust war on the Yemen people in favor of Iran,” said Hadi.

Earlier on Thursday Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman said that any change at the heart of the Arab policy in Yemen will lead to a stronger terror threat in the region.

“If we want to create another Hezbollah in the Middle East, then let’s change our policy in Yemen,” he said.

“We’re pursuing until we can be sure that nothing will happen there like Hezbollah again, because Yemen is more dangerous than Lebanon. It’s next to Bab al-Mandab so if something happens there, that means 10 percent of world trade stops. This is the crisis,” he added.

A military intervention was launched by Saudi Arabia in 2015, leading a coalition of nine African and Middle East countries aiming to back the internationally-recognized government headed by Hadi.
