Hurricane Harvey weakens further, soon to become tropical storm: NHC

HOUSTON, Reuters, August 26, 2017– Hurricane Harvey weakened further as it moved across southern Texas on Saturday and was on the cusp of becoming a tropical storm, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

The storm had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (121 km per hour) as of 9 a.m. local time, the NHC said. Below that speed, a storm is classified as a tropical storm.

Harvey was the strongest storm in more than 50 years to hit Texas when it came ashore late on Friday as a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. That is the second-most powerful category of storm as measured by the speed of sustained winds.
