Assad regime, allies target civilians in eastern Ghouta, 5 killed

Orient Net, August 19, 2017— On World Humanitarian Day and as humanitarian activists – along with the UN – reaffirm through a global online campaign that civilians caught in conflict are #NotATarget, a number of civilians have been reported killed or injured, including children, after Assad terrorists and Iranian-led militias violated the “ceasefire agreement” reached by both Jaysh al-Islam and al-Rahman Brigade with Russia to end the fighting in eastern Ghouta and Jobar neighborhood, east of Damascus.

Orient News correspondent Mohammed Abd al-Rahman reported on Saturday (August 19) that “three civilians – one child and two women – were killed by artillery and mortar shelling launched by Assad terrorists at the residential neighborhoods of Hamouryieh in eastern Ghouta.”

Syria Civil Defense volunteers, aka White Helmets, rushed to the targeted civilian-populated areas to evacuate the injured, transporting them to the nearest medical sites, the correspondent added.

In addition, two civilians were also reported killed after mortar shell launched by Assad regime and its allies targeting residential buildings in the city of Zamalka.

Several civilians were injured following a similar shelling in the towns and villages of Douma, Kafarbatna, Ein Terma and Saqba in eastern Ghouta.

At the same time, Assad terrorists shelled the positions of the Free Syrian Army’s al-Rahman Brigade in Jobar neighborhood, east of the capital with chlorine, which led to the injury of a number of opposition fighters, causing suffocation and shortness of breath.

Assad regime’s military escalation and violations come hours after al-Rahman Brigade along with Russia announced a cease-fire agreement in eastern Ghouta and Jobar neighborhood which came into force on Friday evening at 9 o’clock Damascus time.

Jaysh al-Islam also reached a “de-escalation” agreement with the Russian Defense Ministry on June 22, after negotiations in the Egyptian capital Cairo, aimed at controlling the “cease-fire” mechanism in eastern Ghouta.
