Iraqi Committee in Defense of Ashraf urged Iraqi government to end Ashraf siege

The Iraqi Committee in Defense of Ashraf, consisting of 104 political, academic, and tribal personalities released a statement and strongly condemned measures of Iraqi police in heightening Ashraf siege on June 8 and called it a suppressive and outrageous act and in violation of international humanitarian covenants.

The statement is titled “Heightening Ashraf siege and prevention of entry of workers has cut the livelihood of hundreds of families in the area” and states: “Yesterday the police forces fully prevented workers from nearby areas from entering Camp Ashraf for several consecutive days and took another practical step in intensifying Ashraf siege. This limitation not only causes numerous problems for Ashraf residents but causes economic problems and cuts the livelihood of hundreds of Iraqi families and raises discontent among the inhabitants of the nearby villages who are Camp Ashraf neighbors.
Ashraf siege is a suppressive and outrageous measure and is in violation of international humanitarian treaties and against Islamic traditions and behavior and tarnishes Iraq’s international prestige. It is only the desire of the Iranian regime and must end.
