New sanctions must be enacted against Iran for the two days of ballistic missile tests it staged last week, 12 Senate Republicans have proposed.
The Washington Examiner reports Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Lindsey Graham, Kelly Ayotte, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and seven others are frustrated by signs the Obama administration will allow the United Nations to decide if the tests violated a U.N. resolution.
They want to enact the Iran Ballistic Missile Sanctions Act to hobble "every sector of the Iranian economy that directly and indirectly supports Iran’s ballistic missile program," according to The Examiner.
"I have repeatedly called on the administration to impose tough sanctions against Iran for its illicit and dangerous ballistic missile activities. That administration has failed to do so," said Ayotte, a New Hampshire Republican.
"I call on my colleagues in Congress, as well as the administration, to pass this legislation and impose without delay the strongest possible sanctions in order to hold Tehran accountable."
On Monday, the U.S. called a Security Council meeting to protest the launches.
Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said the missiles "were designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons."
