Iran: Khamenei terrified of youths active on the Internet, forms new repressive agency

Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei issued a ruling on Saturday, September 5th appointing new members of an institution formed to increase Internet censoring and crackdown. This new organ, “Supreme Cyberspace Council”, includes heads of the three branches, commander of the Revolutionary Guards, Ministers of Intelligence, Defense and heads of other crackdown organs inside the regime.
In his ruling Khamenei revealed some of the objectives of this new organ:
“Observation over current cyberspace conditions and forecasting developments on the Internet inside the country and the global stage, maintaining all-out security over the country’s cyberspace, effective confrontation against infiltration by foreigners in this field, preventing infiltration and cultural and social damages in this field and effective confrontation against all out cultural attacks.”
To provide legal cover for further Internet crackdown and censorship Khamenei has called for “codifying and confirming security, legal, judiciary and police systems necessary for cyberspace.”
