From the beginning of 2015 to this day over 300,000 asylum seekers have flocked into Europe through the Mediterranean Sea, of which 2,500 have lost their lives, UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming said on Saturday, August 29th.
Fleming criticized European countries for adopting a wrong and mistaken refugee policy, and called on these governments to fairly assume the responsibility of providing refuge to these asylum seekers in order to resolve this crisis.
It is worth noting that through the course of 2014 around 219,000 asylum seekers entered Europe through the Mediterranean. However, these figures have skyrocketed above 300,000 in the first eight months of 2015 alone.
