During past 36 years since the Islamic Republic has been in power, the total population of the country has doubled, but the population of the prisons throughout Iran has grown 7 fold, said Asghar Jahangiri, the Head of Iran’s prisons organization during a session in Ardebil.
He admitted that this astonishing growth in the population of prisons has been the result of a devastating economic policy. Jahangiri added that when the rate of inflation is so high and unemployment in the country is unprecedented, the situation gets ripe for individuals to commit crimes.
