UN: unrestricted access to medical services for Iranian dissidents in Iraq

The conference on the United Nations obligations and assisting Camp Liberty residents in Iraq, was held in Geneva Switzerland in United Nation’s Palais des Nations on Friday, 20th February 2015. The conference was held under the auspices of France Libertes-Foundation of Danielle Mitterrand, Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty, Women’s Human Rights International Association-WHRIA, and International Educational Developent – IED.
A number of initiatives were introduced as part of this conference. These included recognition of Camp Liberty as a refugee camp under the supervision of the UN High Commission for Refugees. A call on the UN and international community to take necessary measures to ensure that the Iraqi Government puts an end to the siege on the camp and guarantees the refugees’ unrestricted access to medical services, and their right to be able to sell their assets.
The theme for this conference was ‘Right to access to medical care’. Specifically, the Conference addressed the problems and persecution of camp residents in accessing medical services since 23 residents have so far lost their lives due to being deprived of access to medical care.



 
Speakers also called on European governments to take immediate action to provide security for the Iranian dissidents in the camp, and halt the policy of appeasement of Iraq on the part of western governments.


 



The conference was organized by the France Libertes-Foundation of Danielle Mitterrand, the Nonviolent Radical Party, the Transnational and Transparty, the Women’s Human Rights International Association-WHRIA, and International Educational Development.


 


Speakers included Eric Voruz, Swiss MP and member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Swiss MP Jean-Charles Rielle, Alfred de Zayas, UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, former MEP Paulo Casaca, Christiane Perregaux, Honorary Professor at the University of Geneva, and Pierre Galand, Président de la Fédération Humaniste Européenne.
Camp Liberty in Iraq houses Iranian dissident including member of the Iranian opposition the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) who have been living in Iraq for decades.
