Iran Executes Man Despite International Pressure

RadioFreeEurope/ RadioLiberty , 1 June 2014 – Iran has hanged a man accused of links to an exiled opposition group, despite international pressure on the Islamic Republic to halt the execution.
Iran’s official media announced the execution of Gholamreza Khosravi Savadjani on June 1.
The official IRNA news agency said Savajani was sentenced to death in 2010 for donating money and providing assistance to the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK) group.
It said Khosravi had been detained several times since the early 1980 and had spent several years in custody.
The Mujahedeen-e-Khalq is seeking the overthrow of the Islamic Republic.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, have denounced Khosravi’s 2010 trial as unfair.
Iran remains the second biggest executioner in the world, after China, according to the United Nations.
