NCRI, 6 Nov 2013 – The hunger strike by hundreds of residents of Camp Liberty and Iranians in Geneva, Berlin, London, Ottawa, and Melbourne entered its 66th day on Tuesday.
The hunger strikes began after the September 1 attack on Camp Ashraf, Iraq. The Iraqi forces mass executed 52 members of Iranian opposition, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and took seven other residents hostage.
A doctor at Camp Liberty who checks the physical condition of the hunger strikers every day wrote in a letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: “Most of the men and women on hunger strike have lost 20 per cent of their weight. They are suffering from lack of sleep, headaches, dizziness, failing eyesight and hearing, various muscular, bone and joint pains and lack of concentration. I can cite various cases whose lives are at risk, especially among the female hunger strikers.”
He also warned that the Liberty residents are on the brink of a great humanitarian catastrophe unfolding before the eyes of the international community, and urgent action was crucial to prevent this catastrophe.
Iranians in many countries have been staging protests on Monday to support the hunger strikes demand that include demanding urgent action to release the seven Camp Ashraf hostages and to protect the residents at Camp Liberty, Iraq.
