Frankfurter Allgemeine, 24 Oct 2013 – Professor Rita Süssmuth, speaker of the German Federal Bundestag for 10 years, says Iranian dissidents – members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, have transferred from the very well-developed Camp Ashraf to Camp Liberty during the past two years under pressures from the Iraqi government. From then on the number of attacks has increased horribly. Only 100 residents were permitted to remain in Ashraf, in agreement with the United States government and United Nations, to protect the PMOI’s property in the camp. However, on September 1st Iraqi forces – in collaboration with Iran – carried out a massacre in Ashraf. They executed 52 and abducted 7 of the residents.
Saving the lives of human beings and establishing security is a humanitarian duty. Words must come with actions. The West must rise to its duties and have the seven abducted individuals released. The protection of Camp Liberty residents must most definitely be provided and guaranteed by the UN. The Iraqi government under the prime ministry of Nouri Maliki neither intends nor has the competence to assume the responsibility of protection, which is upon his government under international laws.
Iraq has a duty to act based on its responsibilities. This status cannot continue without our response and Germany’s response.
