World community must impose punitive measures on Iranian regime for terrorist attack on Ashraf City

Following a missile attack against the main base of the Iranian Resistance in Iraq’s Diyala Province by agents on the payroll o the regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, the mullahs’ ambassador to Iraq must be expelled.

In an act of war on Iraq’s sovereignty, the regime’s agents launched an aerial attack against Ashraf City – home to the main democratic Iranian opposition movement People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran – on May 26, 2008, at 16:23 local time, using ‘Grad’ missiles.

Upon inspection, remnants of the missiles were found to be engraved with the Persian‐calendar date of manufacture, ʺ24‐5‐1384ʺ (August 15, 2005).

Fortunately, the PMOI reported no injuries as a result of the attack.

This blatant act of international terrorism is the mullahs’ response to the landmark judgement of the United Kingdom Court of Apeal which on May 7 found without question the PMOI is not terrorist and ordered the Home Secretary to lift the ban on the grou.

As a result, the world’s greatest state sponsor of terror has directed its embassy in Baghdad to coordinate terrorist attacks against Ashra. All PMOI personnel enjoy ‘protected persons’ status under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Such criminal plots against them are a clear violation of international law, International Humanitarian Law, and the Geneva Conventions, and as such constitute a ‘war crime’.

The Coalition should demand that the Iraqi government expel the regime’s ambassador to Iraq, Revolutionary Guards commander Hassan Kazemi‐Qomi, and bring the perpetrators of this act of terror to justice. It must take immediate steps to prevent any further such attacks on Ashraf. The International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees are duty‐bound to adopt measures condemning this heinous crime. The UN Security Council must impose comprehensive sanctions against the regime, in particular over its criminal behaviour in Iraq.
