Iran: two Liberty residents’ family members detained

Nine days ago Iranian intelligence agents arrested Reza Akbari Monfared and his son Ali, two relatives of Liberty residents. The regime’s officials are refusing to provide any information regarding their conditions and whereabouts to family members.

Mr. Reza Akbari Monfared is a former political prisoner of the 1980s. Four of his siblings by the names of Alireza, 20, and Gholamreza, 26, were executed in 1981 and 1985, respectively, while two others; Roghie, 30, and Abdolreza, 23, were among the victims of executions in the 1988 massacre of political prisoners.
His sister, Mrs. Maryam Akbari Monfared, 38, mother of three small children, was arrested on 31 December 2010 on the mullah fabricated pretext of ‘mohareb’ (enmity against God) and later convicted to 15 years in prison. In complete obscenity, the mullahs’ so-called court described her ‘crime’ as the presence of a number of family members in Ashraf and the execution of a number of others for supporting the PMOI.
Increasing crackdown and imposing pressure on families of Ashraf and Liberty residents, coinciding with intensifying the cruel blockade and violating the minimum rights of Ashraf and Liberty residents, are the terrified responses of the down-falling mullahs in the face of a wave of domestic and international crises that are drawing the regime ever closer each day to its doomed overthrow.
