47 Iraqi dignitaries call on UN, US to ensure Ashraf and Liberty residents’ rights

Forty seven Iraqi independent political dignitaries, jurists, tribal sheikhs and civil organizations leaders issued a statement to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the obligations of the UN and US to ensure Ashraf and Liberty residents’ rights.

Excerpts of this statement are as follows:

Mr. Ban Ki-moon
United Nations Secretary-General
The concerning conditions of refugees in Ashraf and Liberty, who are considered Iraq’s dear guests for a quarter of a century, are important to us and their protection and well-being is of the utmost significance and special priority for the Iraqi people.
We have witnessed their goodwill in the process of their transfer from their permanent residence to Liberty, while Liberty is in conditions worse than a prison and they are being deprived of their refugee rights in the most illegal manner. Their rights include freedom of movement officially stated to by the UN High Commission for Refugees.
The Iraqi government and UNAMI have continuously neglected all shortages with the justification of Camp Liberty being a temporary site. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General overlooking violations of international human rights standards, intentionally or unintentionally, is practically providing a green light to the Iraqi government to carry out the Iranian regime’s demands against the dissident refugees of this regime.
Therefore, we the signatories of this statement remind the heavy responsibility bearing on the shoulders of the UN and also the US on safeguarding the residents and recognizing their rights based on international conventions. We demand an end to the illegal and unilateral pressures against these refugees. We expect the UN and US to impel the Iraqi government to halt imposing pressure and siege, stop its strong tone against Iranian regime dissidents, abide by international laws regarding refugees and at the least remain committed to its agreements signed with the UN Special Representative.
The signatories include:
Taha al-Loheibi – Member, Iraqiya Coalition
Methal al-Alousi – Secretary-General, Iraqi Umma Party
Minas Ibrahim al-Yousefi – Secretary-General, Iraqi Christian Democratic Party
