Ashraf-Liberty residents: Kobler’s remarks pave the road for third massacre

al-Dustour, Jordan, 26 July 2012 – Residents of Ashraf and Liberty in Iraq said 22 Ashraf residents were crushed by armored vehicles during an attack by Iraqi forces in April 2011 and they accused Special Representative to Secretary General Martin Kobler of completely forgetting the “implementation of comprehensive, independent and transparent investigations” called for by the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The residents condemned Kobler’s remarks at the UN Security Council, where he gratitude the Iraqi government and asked the defenseless residents to abstain from “instigation and violence”. They insisted these remarks will pave the path for a third massacre against the residents of these two camps.
Ashraf and Liberty residents shared Kobler’s remarks with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in two separate letters with more than 3,000 signatures stressing 49 residents were killed in the 2009 and 2011 attacks by the Iraqi government and over 1,000 were injured. However, the Iraqi government does not permit the residents to transfer the necessary supplies – purchased at their own expense – from Ashraf to Liberty for the disabled and ill.
The residents said under temperatures of 55 degrees Celsius, the Iraqi government refuses to connect Liberty to the city water network or pump water from a canal located only 150 meters outside of the camp. Furthermore with serious electricity shortages, the Iraqi government does not allow the residents’ power generators be transferred from Ashraf to Liberty. And in the completely gravel and rocky grounds of Liberty, the construction of footpaths and canopies is also prevented, and in addition to this the Iraqi government is stonewalling the procurement of Camp Liberty residents’ fundamental supplies and vital necessities.
Moreover, the Iranian opposition took action in precedence of the announcement of a roadmap for the transfer of People’s Mojahedin Iran residents in a manner to gain their content and convince the Iraqi government, accusing the Iraqi National Security Advisor and SRSG Martin Kobler of preparing a plan according to which the transfer to a hotel in Baghdad will take place under the eyes of the Iranian regime’s embassy under the cover of the Iran Haj and Pilgrimage Organization.
In a statement, the National Council of Resistance of Iran said Iraqi National Security Advisor Faleh Fayaz and SRSG Martin Kobler have prepared a “repugnant plan” for the transfer of Ashraf and Liberty residents to Hotel Yamame, with the intermediation of the Iranian regime’s embassy in Baghdad. The NCRI statement continued this hotel was leased by the Iranian regime’s embassy from the beginning of 2011 and is currently in Iranian intelligence control under the cover of the “Iran Haj and Pilgrimage Organization”. The NCRI explained the goal of this plan is also to cover up the failure of the temporary transit location project, which from the very beginning was a suspicious scheme intended for the annihilation of the Iranian regime opposition. This is a reference to Camp Hurriya near Baghdad airport where a portion of Camp Ashraf residents have been relocated to.
