Demonstration of orphans and widows in Baghdad
Al-Sharqiya TV, 19 February 2010 – Hundreds of orphans and widows staged a demonstration in Baghdad calling on the government and Parliament to pass laws to better their livelihood and social conditions, and the fact that their rights stated under law have been neglected. In the frontlines of this demonstration one placard read, ‘It is our right to live like all children of the world.’ The orphans and widows chanted slogans calling on officials to look into their affairs and take their conditions into consideration. The organizers of this demonstration said most of the orphans and widows taking part in this demonstration are victims of the violence and terrorism that have taken place in recent years.
The UN 2008 report reiterates that there are nearly 1.14 million orphans in Iraq, and nearly 3 million women, most of them widows have taken the responsibility of overseeing their families’ affairs.
“No rights, no income, no home,” one women said in the demonstration. “And the government is silent. These are orphans that neither have a father nor a mother; they are victims of terrorism… I demand these orphans’ rights from Iraq…”
