Iranian Resistance Units commemorate MEK’s historic Tehran demonstration in 1981

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, September 30, 2020—In recent days, the Iranian Resistance Units, the internal network of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), organized various activities in cities checkered across the country commemorating MEK’s historic Tehran demonstration on September 27, 1981, in Tehran, where young students chanted ‘down with Khomeini, hail to freedom’ for the first time after the 1979 revolution.

The Resistance Units repeated slogans of MEK’s September 27, 1981 slogan such as “The Supreme Leader’s end is near” and said, “From 1981 until today the revolt continues, long live freedom.” They also commemorated the hundreds of students and young teenagers who were murdered by security forces on that day.

In addition to various districts of Tehran, Resistance Unit members also took to graffiti and spread anti-regime slogans in cities such as Shiraz, Isfahan, Tabriz, Ahvaz, Nishapur, Torbat Heidariyeh, Gorgan, Kermanshah, Babol, Bojnurd, Kurdistan, Lahijan, Gilan, Karaj, Zabol, Arak, Qom, Hendijan, Hamadan, Bushehr, Yazd, Varamin, Kerman, and Bandar Abbas.

Their slogans read:

“Since 1981 until today the revolt continues”

“The message of those brave youths and students in the September 1981 demonstration was down with the dictator”

“The message of those brave youths and students on September 27, 1981 demonstration was the Supreme Leader’s end is near.”

“Hail to the martyrs fallen for freedom”

“Supreme Leader, shame on you, let go of power”

“Down with the dictator”

“The victory is in our hands”

Simultaneously, two Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) Basij bases were targeted by the brave and defiant youths in Tehran and Isfahan. The Basij are the most hated suppressive paramilitary force inside Iran and a subsidiary of the terrorist-designated IRGC. Its main role is to preserve the mullahs’ rule through the crackdown of protests and demonstrations, such as the November 2019 nationwide uprising.

Also, in other districts of Isfahan, a center focused on promoting the mullahs’ fundamentalism was torched by defiant youths. These widely hated sites are used by the regime to promote propaganda and boost suppressive measures against the population.

On the same days, in other cities such as Iranshahr, Lahijan, and Khavaf (Razavi Khorasan province), images of regime officials and propaganda banners were torched as an act of outrage toward the regime.

After five nationwide uprisings that took place in Iran since the end of 2017, these acts against the regime’s suppressive centers have increased. Recently on Sunday, September 27, the mullahs’ Supreme Court that had issued the death sentences of 27-year old Iranian wrestler Navid Afkari for taking part in anti-regime protests back in 2018 was torched by rebellious and brave youths in the city Shiraz.

This act of public outrage received wide international media coverage and even state-run websites and newspapers.

Background on MEK’s historic demonstration on September 27, 1981

On June 20, 1981, amid increasing persecution and repression by the newly-founded regime of Ruhollah Khomeini, the MEK tested the democratic environment a final time by launching a demonstration to remind Khomeini of his responsibilities to respect the fundamental freedoms of the Iranian people. In Tehran, more than 500,000 people attended the demonstration on very short notice. In response, Khomeini ordered the IRGC to open fire on the unarmed and peaceful protesters. Following the event, the MEK tried to break Khomeini’s oppression.

While during the early years after the revolution regime founder Ruhollah Khomeini had the absolute power and authority, chanting slogans against his rule was a brave act to break oppression. Khomeini, who was welcomed in Iran as a “holy imam” showed its true colors. On September 27 of the same year, supporters of MEK took to the street again to challenge the rule of oppression. Again, the regime responded in the most brutal way.

In one day, more than 1,100 young students and teenagers were gunned down on the street by Khomeini’s suppressive forces. Hundreds of arrested students were executed on the same night without being identified.
