Protests by retired teachers in Tehran

Reported by PMOI/MEK

Iran, Jan. 14, 2019 – On Sunday, retired Iranian teachers held demonstrations in front of the headquarters of the Association for Teachers’ Fund in Vanak, Tehran. The protesters held banners that read, “Give us our share.”

The retired teachers have been regularly protesting to the government neglecting their basic rights. In December, the teachers held demonstrations in protest to the insufficient budget that the regime has allocated to them. The retired teachers have been holding demonstrations in front of government buildings including the Budget and Planning Organization, and in different cities including Tehran, Isfahan, Rasht, and Yazd. While the value of rial has plummeted, the regime has refrained from balancing the salaries of education sector workers.

The teachers’ main complaint is to government corruption and mismanagement of the national budget, which is taking its toll on the country’s education system. In a tragic event late last year, a heater caught fire in a girls’ school in Sistan Baluchistan province, killing four schoolgirls and injuring several others with severe burns. Following the event, retired teachers held demonstrations in front of government buildings, in which they chanted, “The budget has become your share, and the children are burning,” indicating incidents in schools are happening because the government doesn’t allocate proper budgets to providing better facilities and infrastructure.

The retired teachers were also calling for the release of their detained colleagues. On Sunday, the teachers were chanting, “Imprisoned teachers must be freed.”

Among the imprisoned are teachers rights activists Esmail Abdi and Mahmoud Beheshti Langaroudi, who have been arrested and incarcerated for organizing protests.
