Iran: 23rd day of refinery workers’ strike

Iran, August 24, 2020—On Sunday, August 23, workers of Iran’s oil and gas refineries, petrochemicals, and power plants, continued their strike for the 23rd consecutive day. This protest has expanded to 55 focal points in 24 cities across 12 provinces throughout Iran and new workers are joining the movement every day.

On Monday, August 24, workers of the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company continued their protest rally in front of the governorate in the city of Shush in Khuzestan province, southwest Iran. The strike has continued for 71 consecutive day.

In Sunday’s rally the workers were seen chanting, “Neither the government nor the governer care about the nation,” in a reference to their ongoing daily difficulties.

The protesting workers insist on continuing the strike and maintaining their unity until their demands are met.

The most important issues raised by these workers during this strike are as follows:

Immediate payment of delayed paychecks and renewal of their insurance booklets

Immediate return to work for fired colleagues

Immediate arrest of Omid Assadbeigi (CEO of the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Agro-Industrial Complex) and life imprisonment for this corrupt individual

Immediate dismissal of corrupt employers from Haft Tappeh

Immediate return of embezzled wealth to the workers

Ending the careers of already retired managers

Strikes and protests by Railway Company workers

Workers of the Railway Company in the cities of Karaj, Kordan, Hashtgerd, Abyek and Ziyaran (all located in Alborz province west of Tehran), held a rally at the factory site on Sunday. They are protesting officials’ neglect in response to their demands during the current dire financial circumstances, and seeking their delayed paychecks and premiums.

It is worth noting that in all Railway Company workers have seen their paychecks delayed for several months and they are facing significant problems with their insurance premiums.

On Sunday, August 23, a group of contract teachers gathered in front of a local government building in Alborz province protesting and demanding a change in their employment status.

“Contract teachers and tutors, while providing their services as teachers similar to those teachers officially employed by the Education Ministry, have much lower salaries, and even half of the official teachers’ salaries,” they said.

This method of hiring teachers is the solution of Iranian regime President Hassan Rouhani’s government to pay lower salaries to the country’s teachers and has continued for several years now.

In past few days, contract and substitute teachers held several protest rallies demanding official employment by the Education Ministry.

On Sunday, August 23, a large group of contract teachers gathered in front of the mullahs’ Education Ministry building protesting their limbo employment status, lack of job security and demanding a change in their employment. It is worth noting that in the last decade, to compensate for a shortage in the number of teachers, the regime’s Education Ministry has hired more than 50,000 teachers and educators based on temporary contracts and low salaries, and refuses to permanently employ them.

On Sunday, a group of Shiraz Telecommunications Industries Company (ITI) workers gathered in front of the Fars province governor’s office in the city of Shiraz, south-central Iran, to address their demands.

“Payment of arrears, including compensation for delay without any conditions and change of the executive board located is one of the most important demands of the workers,” said the ITI workers’ representative said about their demands.
