Continued strikes and protests by workers in southern Iran

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, September 17, 2020—On Wednesday, September 16, municipal workers in the city of Kut-e Abdollah, Khuzestan province, southeast Iran, went on strike demanding their delayed paychecks and protested the official’s hollow promises.

It is worth noting that these workers refused to collect garbage from the city, since Monday and officials continue to ignore their demands.

These workers have repeatedly gone on strike and gathered in front of various government centers across Khuzestan province in the cities of Karun and Kut-e Abdollah. They have not received their wages for two and half months now.

On Wednesday, September 16, the workers of the Pars Ampoule factory in the city of Saveh, northern Iran, continued their strike for the third consecutive day, protesting low wages and difficult job conditions, and demanding immediate return to work for 11 of their expelled colleagues.

The protesting workers said that two months ago one worker was working on each machine in the production line, but eventually it reached 2 and finally 4 machines by one operator.

Also, the summer season and the lack of proper air conditioners in the production hall have created many difficulties for the workers.

These workers are demanding an increase in their payments, immediate return to work for their expelled colleagues and one worker per machine.

On Tuesday, September 15, company workers of the Baqaei Hospital in the city of Ahvaz, southwest Iran, gathered in the hospital courtyard protesting the officials’ refusal to pay their three-month overdue wages.

These employees have been working without a permanent contract and salary for the past three months.

“So far, we have repeatedly appealed to government authorities to receive our delayed paychecks, but each time we have been threatened with dismissals by managers if we continue to protest,” the protesting workers said.

On Tuesday, September 15, municipal workers in the city of Susangard, southwest Iran, held a gathering protesting their paychecks being delayed for the past several months and officials’ hollow promises. These protesting workers are also demanding their insurance premiums be deposited.

“We have not received our insurance premiums for several months in addition to delayed paychecks since last March,” said a protesting worker. This has resulted in many difficulties for both the workers and their families in receiving treatment in state hospitals.

“Despite repeated follow ups by the workers to receive their wages, municipal officials are not respond convincingly to the workers' demands. As a result, we intend to continue protesting until all our rights are fully met,” he added.

“We work but have no salaries! In the current economic circumstances, even if a worker gets paid, he will not be able to provide basic needs, let alone us. Our wages have been delayed for several months,” another worker said.
