Italian lawmakers call for release of inmates in Iran, warn of catastrophe

Iran, April 13, 2020—Italian lawmakers, consisting of Senators and Members of Parliament, issued a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressing grave concerns about the coronavirus spread in Iran during the global pandemic and the threat of a humanitarian catastrophe, especially in Iran’s prisons. A large number of Iranian inmates, especially political prisoners, are facing significant threats and must be released immediately, the letter emphasizes.

A large number of inmates in Iran are facing grave threats due to poor hygiene conditions and the ruling regime, despite a call made by the Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur on the situation in Iran, has taken no measures to save their lives, especially political prisoners and prisoners of conscience. Their health is a very grave concern and they need to be released immediately.

The Iranian regime, despite having more $100 billion in foundations linked to the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is not providing any support for the Iranian people. All the while, according to a report wired by the state-run ILNA news agency, each year the Iranian regime is sending $25 million of medicine and $200 million of medical equipment to Iraq. In parallel fashion, the regime is rerouting all aid provided by international organizations and placing them at the disposal of regime-linked entities and the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in order to finally sell them to ordinary Iranians at skyrocketing prices.

In their letter, with a copy sent to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, the Italian lawmakers reiterated the fact that the killing spree of more than 1,500 people and arrest of more 12,000 during the November 2019 protests—to which the Iranian regime has yet to provide any precise statistics of those killed and arrested—and Tehran’s deceptive measures in cloaking the truth about shooting down a Ukrainian airliner with surface-to-air missiles by the IRGC.

More recently, the regime delayed on informing the general public inside Iran due to political reservations, including calls for people to take part in the 1979 anniversary march, the Majlis (parliament) elections, the decision to not quarantine the city of Qom that went on to become Iran’s COVID-19 epicenter, and continuing flights to China as the source of this virus transfer.

As a result, the coronavirus spread in Iran has been very intense and transformed into a humanitarian catastrophe.
