The Iranian regime’s fear of MEK’s growing influence

Analysis by PMOI/MEK

Iran, July 26, 2020—In the last 41 years, there has never been a single day that the Iranian regime hasn’t spread propaganda and psychological warfare against the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). But the wave of slander that the regime has been directing toward the main opposition in the past week has reached an unprecedented scale.

During the Friday prayers of July 24, regime authorities expressed their fear for the growing support of the MEK which the annual meeting of the Iranian Resistance, the “Free Iran Global Summit 2020,” which connected 30,000 places in 102 countries, including Iran and Ashraf 3, the headquarters of MEK members in Albania.

The Friday prayer imam of Natanz said: “[The MEK] want to harm our social wealth such as the Supreme Leader [Ali Khamenei] and the Guardian Council, and the [MEK] are seeking public protests.” Khamenei, the top leader of the regime, has the final say on all critical manners. The Guardian Council, whose 12 members are all directly or indirectly selected and approved by the office of the supreme leader, oversees all branches of the government.

In paradoxical statements, the Friday prayer imam of Ardestan blamed the MEK for the crimes committed by regime forces in Syria, then in a complete turnaround added, “Today the [MEK] has changed its methods. Today the [MEK] is not seeking a military war but a cyber and media warfare. Our youth must be careful and not fall into their traps and believe their lies.”

Interestingly, this regime authority is making these remarks while Tehran has been deeply engaged in a campaign of cyberattacks and fake news against the MEK.

“Another thing the [MEK] does to harm the national wealth and the supreme leader is to create public unrest and distrust [toward the regime] and decrease hope and open up social wounds,” said Varamin Friday prayer imam.

The reason for the regime’s fear for the MEK

One of the main fears of the regime is the MEK’s role in nationwide uprisings of December 2017 and November 2019. The mullahs know too well that the Iranian society is in a powder keg situation and can explode any minute.

Another reason for the regime's fear is because of MEK’s daily revelations about the regime’s role in suppressing the population and causing social crises has touched and created momentum in every segment of the Iranian society, especially the young and rebellious generation.

In recent days we witnessed an uprising of people of Behbahan which featured the slogan “down with the dictator” and a widespread Twitter campaign that forced the regime to halt the execution of three youths arrested during the November 2019 nationwide uprising. The Iranian population is becoming more and more restive and less fearful of the suppression apparatus of the mullahs.

Fear for the recognition of the alternative

The Iranian regime’s fear of worldwide recognition for the democratic alternative grew further during the Free Iran Global summit events because this event the Iranian opposition’s political, executive, and organizational power.

Joseph Liberman, former U.S. senator said: “Is there another opposition group, frankly is there another—are there many groups in the world who could have organized a meeting like this globally? I don't think so. Is there another group in opposition to the Iranian regime, on behalf of the Iranian people, with support in Iran, anywhere near the NCRI? No.”

This is exactly what the mullahs fear because there are several factors that clearly show that the regime is nearing its end and there is an alternative that can secure a democratic transition of power to the people.

In his remarks on the Free Iran Global Summit, Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York, said: “The Iranian regime officials know that this organization is a total threat to them, and when they see today this gathering of people taking advantage of Zoom and the new modern methods of communication, and our ability to broadcast all throughout Iran despite their best efforts to block us, they realize they have a formidable foe.”

Giuliani added: “There is a shadow government to handle the interim so we don't have the situation that we had in Iraq several years ago, so the government can continue and the people can start to prosper immediately.”

The features of a democratic alternative

The capability and readiness of an alternative are tested when it can bring both the people and all political sides to the conclusion that it is not only capable to overthrow the regime but to also lead the country destroyed by the mullahs to prosperity and peace.

This is a reality that not only the critics but also enemies of the MEK are acknowledging. Elias Hazrati, member of the Majlis (regime’s Parliament) said: “The MEK is in ambush with a huge capital in order to turn the relationship between people and the officials into a hostile relationship. Unfortunately, the MEK has achieved many successes in this regard.”

As a statement of 31 prominent American figures mentions: “The one organization that has done more than any other entity, including governments, to free Iranian citizens from tyranny and the world from fundamentalist-inspired terrorism is the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). The NCRI strives relentlessly to ensure that hope for democracy and an end to injustice remains alive in Iran.”
