Iran coronavirus update: Over 297,300 deaths, warnings of 5th wave due to elections rallies

Iran, May 24, 2021—Over 297,300 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 543 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Sunday afternoon local time, May 23. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 78,848, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 69,436 in Tehran, 19,780 in Isfahan, 18,115 in Razavi Khorasan, 18,524 in Khuzestan, 18,115 in Razavi Khorasan, 12,188 in East Azerbaijan, 12,010 in Lorestan, 11,995 in Mazandaran, 11,143 in West Azerbaijan, 9807 in Fars, 8293 in Alborz, 7240 in Golestan, 6816 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 6663 in Kerman, 6598 in Hamedan, 6193 in Markazi (Central), 4308 in North Khorasan, 3530 in Hormozgan, and 2776 in South Khorasan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Health minister Saeed Namaki dismissed his senior advisor Esmaeil Akbari and said on Monday, “What I understand about the advisory role is that it is expected that, if the advisor does not approve the minister’s opinion or if his advisory is not expedient, he should resign from his post.” (Source: Hamshahri Daily)

Minoo Mohraz, member of the national Covid-19 Task Force, said on Monday, “The main problem that has caused the fourth peak and raised the number of deaths is the UK variant. And now, the Indian and South African variants have entered the country as well. If there are congregations due to holidays and elections, only God can help us and we must wait for a fifth peak in June.” (Source: Hamshahri)

Iraj Khosronia, the president of the Community of Specialist Physicians of Iran said on Monday, “The shortage of vaccines is preventing the acceleration of public vaccination in the country. At this rate, and given that the 40-50 year-old population is estimated to be 20 million people, we can’t vaccinate the people who qualify for vaccines by the end of the year.” (Source: Mehr News Agency)

Regarding the ongoing power outages, Mohammad Ali Mohseni, member of the Majlis Health Commission said on Monday, “Preserving vaccines requires special considerations and will face problems. Health services are also facing problems. Hospitals are faced with power outages, and it is causing damage to public health. The health sector is suffering serious damage. Health centers are tasked with vaccination. They are faced with serious problems. The power outage is due to the mismanagement of the energy ministry.” (Source: ISNA)

In Tehran, Alireza Zali, the head of the national Covid-19 Task Force said on Sunday, “The number of new hospitalized patients in the past few days had gone below 900, but in the past 24 hours, it has jumped to 1044.” (Source: IRNA)
