Iran coronavirus update: Over 256,500 deaths, highest daily death toll in 142 days

Iran, April 18, 2021—Over 256,500 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 539 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Sunday afternoon local time, April 18. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 66,732. around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 58,641 in Tehran, 16,745 in Isfhaan, 16,385 in Razavi Khorasan, 15,474 in Khuzestan, 10,845 in Mazandaran, 10,813 in Lorestan, 10,513 in East Azerbaijan, 9653 in West Azerbaijan, 8991 in Gilan, 7597  in Fars, 6575 in Golestan, 6468 in Alborz, 5826 in Sistan & Baluchistan, 5763 in Hamedan, 5754 in Kerman, 5308 in Markazi, 5134 in Kermanshah, 4535 in Semnan, 4462 in Kurdistan, 2939 in Qazvin, 2925 in Hormozgan, 2805 in Zanjan, 2646 in Ilam, and 2619 in Bushehr. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

Sima Sadat Lari, the spokesperson of the health ministry, declared 405 deaths in the past 24 hours, which sets the record for the past 142 days. Lari also declared that there are 102 critical patients, which is a record in the past 102 days.

Hossein Ghana’ati, MP from the Majlis (parliament) health commission, said on Saturday, “We have 300-odd [daily deaths], and if we consider those who aren’t accounted or in the official stats, about 600 people are dying every day. During the [Iran-Iraq] war, we had 60 deaths every day, and we are still facing the post-war crises today, even though most of the dead weren’t married. [Covid-19 victims] have families. Their kids will be faced with social crises stemming from not having guardians.” (Source: State television)

Alireza Raisi, the spokesperson of the National Covid-19 Task Force, said on Sunday, “At the climax of the third peak, the number of hospitalized coronavirus patients reached 23,000 cases. We still haven’t reached the peak of the fourth wave and our hospitalized cases have already reached 43,000. We forecast the hospitalized cases to reach 60,000, which is an unprecedented record. We will not be exiting red conditions anytime soon.” (Source: IRNA).

Raisi also said, “The fourth wave is not comparable to any previous waves. Incoming patients in hospitals and contagiousness have increased with explosive speed. Non-hospitalized patients have also increased and we are still in the upward slope of this wave. We don’t know where it will stop.” (Source: State television)

In Tehran, Nader Tavakoli, the deputy chief of the Covid-19 Task Force, said on Sunday, “The wave of the disease continues to grow and the number of patients is very high. All elective measures have been canceled based on government orders, and all beds will be allocated to emergency services and covid response. There will be no other services. There are currently 8,000 hospitalized patients in the province, and every day, we have 1,400 new patients and 100 deaths. We discharge around 1,100 patients, but in reality many of them need to remain hospitalized.”

Mohsen Hashemi, the head of Tehran City Council said on Sunday, “As Tehran’s casualties has reached more than 130 deaths per day and continues to grow, we are returning to the critical conditions of fall.” (Source: IRNA news agency)

Payam Tabarsi, the head of the infectious diseases department of Tehran’s Massih Daneshvari hospital, said on Sunday, “All beds are full. Some hospitals are being added to the list of covid response, but we are still faced with a shortage of beds, and in comparison to before Nowruz, the number of incoming coronavirus patients has increased by a factor of five. If the trend continues, we will continue to face this pressure in the next two to three months.” (Source: Aftab News)

The dean of Isfahan Medical Sciences University said on Sunday, “There are 2397 hospitalized patients in the province, not counting Kashan county. Of this group, 348 are in ICU. In the past 24 hours, 30 people have died.” (Source: ISNA)

The dean of the medical sciences university of Alborz province said on Sunday, “Unfortunately, in the past 24 hours, 24 covid-19 patients lost their lives and the total number of deaths has reached 3,171.” (Source: ISNA)

According to IRNA news agency on Sunday, the number of deaths in Kermanshah province has double. “The covid management of Kermanshah Medical Sciences University said that in the past 24 hours, 14 people have died in the province, which has increased by eight in comparison to the previous day,” IRNA reported.

In Yazd province, the governor of Abarkooh said on Sunday, “Coronavirus has almost spun out of control in Abarkooh and all of the city’s hospitals have been filled to capacity.” (Source: Mehr News Agency)
