“A heavy Covid-19 wave is threatening the country. The number of new cases in some provinces continues to rise,” said the spokesperson for the regime’s Health Ministry on Sunday. “Unfortunately, last week we witnessed a relative increase in the number of positive cases and deaths in comparison to the week before. The death rate has been highest in the provinces of Khuzestan, Mazandaran, Golestan, and Semnan, respectively” she added, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“This virus is not limited to Khuzestan province alone. At least 16 provinces are reporting such cases and to this day we have discovered 187 cases of the UK strain and 20 deaths,” said Alireza Raisi, spokesperson of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Saturday. “The speed this virus is transmitting is so high that it may fill up all hospital beds of a province and lead to chaos,” he added, according to state TV.

“The current circumstances can be the calm before a storm,” said a senior official in Tehran’s Khomeini Hospital on Sunday. “The mutated UK strain is transferring extremely fast, being the main problem at hand. This may trigger a fourth and stronger wave,” this official added, according to the Mehr news agency.

“In the past week, the number of new cases in Khuzestan increased by 74 percent, those hospitalized by 90 percent and the death rate by more than 100 percent in comparison to the previous week,” said the dean of Khuzestan Medical Sciences University on Sunday. “The number of Covid-19 deaths in Khuzestan province was reported at 54. This figure reached 132 this week. Eleven cities in Khuzestan province are registered as red zones and eight are orange zones,” this official added, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

“From a medical viewpoint all patients are now considered to have contracted the UK strain of Covid-19, unless it is proven otherwise,” said the head of Abuzar Children’s Hospital in Ahvaz on Saturday. “Prior to the UK strain only one in ten children with Covid-19 symptoms would be hospitalized. Now, one in every three such children are in ICUs. The situation in the cities of Abadan and Khorramshahr is worse than other cities and towns across Khuzestan province,” this official added, according to state TV.

“During the past 12 months each day we had an average 312 patients with Covid-19 and average daily death rate of ten,” said the dean of West Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University on Sunday. “During this period, seven percent of all the Covid-19 cases six percent of all the deaths were from West Azerbaijan province,” this official added, according to the regime's official IRNA news agency.

“Currently we have more than 300 coronavirus patients and more than one fourth of them are in ICUs, most of them being in dire conditions,” said the dean of Gilan Medical Sciences University on Saturday. “Most of the cities in Gilan province are registered as orange or yellow zones. Recently we have seen the deaths of several patients in younger ages without any underlying illnesses. A number of cases have been the UK strain,” this official added, according to state TV.

“After Khuzestan, the province of Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari is the most vulnerable province regarding the spread of the mutated strain,” said the dean of Chaharmahal & Bakhtiari Medical Sciences University on Sunday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
