Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, February 27, 2021—Over 222,500 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 497 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Saturday afternoon local time, February 27. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 59,980 around a third of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 52,806 in Tehran, 14,750 in Razavi Khorasan, 14,335 in Isfahan, 11,600 in Khuzestan, 8423 in East Azerbaijan, 8355 in Qom, 5775 in Golestan, 5233 in Hamedan, 4529 in Kermanshah, 3852 in Kurdistan, 3455 in Semnan, 2767 in Ardabil, 2504 in Qazvin, and 2156 in South Khorasan. While regime experts are acknowledged that the mutated strain of the Covid-19 virus has engulfed large portions of Iran, regime President Hassan Rouhani resorted to lies once again to justify the delay in procuring the vaccine. “The vaccine has certain conditions these days. First, the side-effects of the vaccines are not truly clear for us, and which vaccine is more effective and until when they are effective… Some people across the globe are even afraid of injecting the vaccine,” he claimed on Saturday. “Today the vaccine is like the mask in the early days of this illness. Remember all the disputes regarding masks in the early days, and some were seen seizing the masks upon their arrival at airports… vaccination will also need time and if we have enough doses of the vaccine it will take months to finalize vaccination throughout the country,” Rouhani added.

“The vaccine must be imported from countries where there is high trust because our people are not guinea pigs and must use vaccines that have been previously tested,” said a member of the Health Committee in the regime’s Majlis (parliament) on Saturday, according to the semi-official ILNA news agency.

“Considering the mutated strain circulating across the country, there is this possibility that regarding its high contraction rate and stronger growth, the death rate will be higher than the previous waves,” said a member of the regime’s National Covid-19 Task Force on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“All the people who care and the experts are screaming that the vaccine is the only solution to this virus. However, they are purchasing the expensive Russian vaccine at a bottleneck pace and continue to hesitate on purchasing the cheaper and approved vaccines,” said the head of the Tehran City Council Health Committee on Saturday, according to the state-controlled Hamdeli newspaper.

“Vaccination will be exceedingly difficult if political issues are not resolved, and there is a possibility that the Nowrouz season (Iranian calendar New Year on March 21) we will be facing a dual crisis of Covid-19 and the psychological/economic dilemmas. You need to take the society’s tolerance into consideration and people may not be able to tolerate such a situation,” according to a Saturday piece published in the state-controlled Hamdeli newspaper.

“In the past three weeks the number of new patients would double every eight days. The samples we sent from Ahvaz and Abadan were all, but one of the mutated strain,” said the dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime's Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“We are not very hopeful about the National Covid-19 Task Force approving quarantine measures in Khuzestan province. When the dean of Ahvaz Medical Sciences University, heads of hospitals across Khuzestan province and health officials are all asking for quarantine measures and for the province to be shut down, this is no longer a political issue,” said the head of the Khuzestan provincial parliamentary body on Saturday. “If the government follows logic and a scientific viewpoint, they must accept the experts’ opinion and act accordingly,” this official added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“In the past four to five weeks we have witnessed a 110 percent increase in the number of positive Covid-19 cases. In the previous four-week period we had 786 cases and in the next such period we registered 1651 cases, meaning an extremely dangerous sign,” said the deputy dean of Bushehr Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“There is truly little time to confront the UK strain. Currently the number of cases of this virus in our province stands at 11,” said the dean of Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.
