“Seven cities are in hyper-red and red conditions and their conditions are deteriorating. Urgent measures are needed for these seven cities,” said regime President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday. “Tehran is considered an orange city but remarkably close to becoming a red zone. All our forces in Tehran’s orange conditions should be focused on having regulations implemented. If not, we may return to red zone status in one or two weeks,” he added.

“The recent weekly rate of new cases stands at around 17 per 100,000 people. Most of these cases are reported from the cities of Ilam, Semnan, Ardabil, Yasuj. They are significantly higher than the country’s average. The country's average death rate is 36 per one million, most of which are reported from the provinces of Yazd, Kurdistan, Ardabil and South Khorasan,” said the spokesperson for the regime’s Health Ministry on Saturday. “Despite the decreasing number of red cities and a relative decrease in the number of deaths and new cases, the number of people hospitalized in some provinces such as Mazandaran, Gilan and Golestan is on the rise. Therefore, the status quo remains fragile and sensitive,” she added, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“The situation in Tehran may have returned to orange status but the situation is extremely fragile. It may return to red status and we may be forced to increase restrictions next week,” said the spokesperson of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Saturday, according to state TV.

“As we return to orange status from red conditions the sensitivities are actually increased,” said Deputy Health Ministry Mohsen Farhadi on Friday as the two-week restrictions came to an end in Tehran. “The status quo in Tehran is fragile due to the high population and economic importance, and this fragility can change the conditions in the capital,” he added, according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

“In the past 24 hours we have lost 34 Covid-19 patients in [Isfahan] province,” said the spokesperson of the Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Saturday, according to the Mehr news agency.

In Golestan province, the dean of the local Medical Sciences University reported 11 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours. “In the past ten days, Golestan province has had double-digit death tolls. Currently, there are 574 patients hospitalized, of which 113 are in ICUs and 54 are under ventilators. Bandar Torkaman is among the seven cities that are considered ‘hyper-red’ zones,” the dean added, according to the Mehr news agency.

“We have lost 17 Covid-19 patients in the past 24 hours, bringing the total in this province to 2022,” said the spokesperson of Kerman Medical Sciences University on Friday, according to the Javan daily, an outlet linked to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).

The governor of Talesh, a city in Gilan province, northern Iran, said on Saturday that his city has been a red zone since last Tuesday and all ICU beds are occupied by coronavirus patients. “We have imposed special restrictions based on instructions issued by the National Covid-19 Task Force,” the official added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

A Saturday piece published in the state-run Arman daily raised this question: “Officials have announced three days in advance that the ‘hyper-red’ province of Tehran is now considered an orange zone after two weeks of restrictions. This announcement comes on Saturday, December 5, at the end of the two-week-long restrictions! Can we truly provide such hope to the people with a decrease of about 100 daily deaths while the number of new daily cases has not changed significantly?”
