“In nearly 43 cities that we have announced, while their numbers could increase or change, about all of them are shut down aside from necessary institutions that need to remain open,” said Deputy Health Minister Alireza Raisi on Sunday. We unfortunately have no other choice. We have gone the distance to not cause a disruption in people’s lives, but we have no other choice considering the current circumstances,” he added, according to state TV.

“We didn’t have so many patients even back in February and March. There are no empty [hospital] beds anywhere,” said Minoo Mohraz, a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Saturday. “One is terrified to see a patient waiting for a place to open and they are just sitting in a hallway with an oxygen capsule next to them. What are we to do for this not to occur? Now that we are in such circumstances, how are we supposed to prevent it?” she asked, according to state TV.

“The golden window to control the virus was back when we shouldn’t have allowed any patient to enter the country and we should have cancelled all the flights,” said an expert in Kerman Medical Sciences University on Monday. “If we continue with the pace, we are witnessing these days we may reach a point where our hospitals will no longer be able to accept new patients and there will be no ICU beds for dire Covid-19 patients. Iran’s death toll from January 29, 2021 (in the next 100 days) will reach around 79,000 to 80,000. This means in the next three months around 40,000 more people will die of Covid-19 in Iran,” the expert added, according to the state-run Khabar Fouri website.

On a Sunday report by the state-run television, Alireza Zali, the head of the National Covid-19 Task Force said, “There are 6,050 Covid-19 patients in Tehran’s hospitals and medical centers and 1,800 are in ICU. Since last night, we had 850 new inpatients and only 500 were discharged. The daily death toll has not decreased in comparison to previous days, and Tehran’s death rates are still increasing.”

According to a report by the state-run Hamshahri newspaper on Monday, Mahmoud Mirlouhi, a member of Tehran City Council, said, “The number of Covid-19 deaths I the capital has reached 150 and 160, which is a 15-20 factor increase in comparison with May, when the daily casualties did not exceed nine deaths. Some experts believe the combination air pollution and the coronavirus can be among the causes of the increasing death rates.”

According to the Khabar Online news website, Mohammad Hassan Hamidi, the Greater Tehran traffic police chief, said on Monday that the Beheshteh Zahra Organization is in a critical situation, referring to the largest cemetery of the capital.

The spokesperson of the health ministry in Lorestan province said on Monday, “In Lorestan, Covid-19 cases and hospitalized patients are increasing at an alarming pace. Aligudarz, Pol Dokhtar, Dorud, and Kuhdasht are among 43 counties that are in critical conditions. The hospitalization rate in Lorestan is 43 per 100,000 population which is considerably higher than the national average. There are 30 Covid-19 deaths per 1 million population, which is also higher than the national average.” (Source: IRNA, October 26)

As reported by the semi-official ISNA news agency on Monday, the head of the Coronavirus Task Force in Kermanshah province said, “The province has 878 ICU beds for Covid-19 patients, and there are currently 852 hospitalized patients. If the increase in hospitalized patients continues, our medical facilities will not suffice. In the past week, we added 80 beds, but all beds are filled quickly. In the last 24 hours alone, 191 new Covid-19 patients were hospitalized, which means about one patient every seven minutes.”

In Yazd province, the spokesperson of the Sadughi Medical Sciences University said on Monday, “Until 8:00 am, we registered 684 coronavirus cases in Yazd, 141 people are hospitalized in ICU, and 61 are in the emergency section.” (Source: Fars News Agency, October 26)
