Iran coronavirus update: Over 132,700 deaths, more than 50 million can contract the virus

Reporting by PMOI/MEK

Iran, October 25, 2020—Over 132,700 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 460 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Sunday afternoon local time, October 25. The official death toll declared by the regime stands at 32,616, around a fourth of the actual figure.

The coronavirus death toll in various provinces include: 31,991 in Tehran, 9922 in Razavi Khorasan, 8113 in Khuzestan, 7222 in Isfahan, 5812 in Mazandaran, 5735 in Qom, 5076 in Qom, 4686 in East Azerbaijn, 3841 in West Azerbaijan, 3686 in Golestan, 3678 in Alborz, 3570 in Hamedan, 2259 in North Khorasan, 2065 in Kerman, 1852 in Markazi (Central), 1250 in Zanjan, and 1034 in South Khorasan. This is in addition to reports obtained from other provinces.

“The current circumstances were forecasted long ago by experts and the necessary warnings were issued. The actual death toll cannot be denied, and the Health Ministry is merely registering the deaths of those patients who tested positive,” said Hossein Ghashlaghi, a member of the Supreme Medical Apparatus Council on Sunday. “Based on field reports from medical professionals and according to the stats of those buried, one can assume that the Covid-19 death toll across the country is around three or four times the official numbers. Refusing to provide transparent reports about the status quo of this illness in the country and merely announcing red or yellow conditions in various cities is a dangerous mistake and cannot be compensated. This is one of the reasons why the death toll has been increasing,” he added, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

“We have the winter and cold weather ahead of us. There are serious concerns that our death toll will increase in the coming days and months,” said Deputy Health Minister Reza Malakzadeh on Saturday. “More than 50 million of the country’s population are still prone to contracting coronavirus,” he added, according to state TV.

“The daily death toll of Covid-19 patients in Tehran is in triple digits. The number of people hospitalized has surpassed the 6000 mark and the number of dire patients is increasing by the day,” said Alireza Zali, head of the Tehran Covid-19 Task Force on Sunday. “This is the highest such stats in Tehran since the beginning of the Covid-19 epidemic… the status quo demands us to have all our assets prepared in semi-war style conditions,” he added, according to Mehr.

“During the past eight months we have never had patients lose their lives in the emergency section,” said Sadegh Niyat, head of Tehran’s Khomeini Hospital. “When many of our patients arrive at a hospital, they are in immediate need of ICU care. Our special units are usually filled very quickly, patients discharged very rarely, and the death toll is rising significantly, in a way that on some days we have one or two deaths in the emergency section. This is the concern we are facing now.”

“We have had 12 percent of our total deaths in the past two weeks. These numbers across the globe are around 6.5 percent, meaning nearly half of ours. In fact, our death ratio is above the global average,” said an official of Tehran Medical University on Saturday, according to state TV.

“The total number of Covid-19 patients in Isfahan province, aside from the two cities of Kashan and Aran & Bidgol are 1778, of which 358 are in dire conditions and placed in ICUs. During the past 24 hours we have had 34 deaths across the province,” said the spokesperson of Isfahan Medical Sciences University on Sunday.

“Covid-19 deaths in Zanjan have increased significantly. The number of people hospitalized in the past week has increased from 400 to 550,” said the dean of Zanjan Medical Sciences University on Sunday, according to Mehr.

In Qom province, “head of the local Medical Sciences University, referring to 18 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, said there are 601 coronavirus patients hospitalized in Qom, of which 152 are in ICUs,” according to a Sunday report published by the Javan daily, a newspaper linked to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).
