Iran, October 4, 2020—Over 116,000 people have died of the novel coronavirus in 450 cities checkered across all of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to reports tallied by the Iranian opposition People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as of Sunday afternoon local time, October 4. The official death count declared by the regime stands at 26,957, around a fifth of the actual figure.

“When the number of new patients is higher than the capacity of our hospitals and medical professionals, some personnel are forced to provide care for patients in six different beds. There are not enough ICU beds to save all the patients,” said an advisor to the regime’s Health Minister on Sunday. “When a nurse is forced to provide care to more than two beds, the quality of the services provided obviously decreases. The death toll may rise far more than the current circumstances,” he added,” according to the regime’s official IRNA news agency.

“If the Covid-19 conditions in Tehran are considered code red, which is the case, and yesterday we witnessed 136 deaths in Tehran, then the city should be locked down for two weeks and not just one,” said a member of the Tehran City Council on Sunday. “Rebounding the economy is important but the lives of our citizens must be our first priority… Our professionals believe a one-week lockdown will only render small changes in the epidemic charts and afterwards we will see the beginning of yet another peak. These restrictions need to be imposed for at least two weeks and if they are not, we shouldn’t slow down or stop the city’s daily routines, and just impose herd immunity measures,” he added, according to IRNA.

“There needs to be a full two-week lockdown in Tehran. We are just one step away from a tsunami of coronavirus victims,” said Tehran City Council chief on Sunday, according to the state-run Hamshahri daily.

On Saturday, Anushirvan Mohseni Bandpey, the provincial governor of Tehran, said on national television, “On September 2, we had 2,860 hospitalized patients. On October 2, that figure reached 4,868, and our deaths are increasing at an equal rate. We will have an emergency session tomorrow at the office of [interior minister Abdolreza] Rahmani Fazli to discuss the conditions of Tehran and the restrictions we suggest. All universities will be holding their classes online and physical presence in classes is banned.”

On the same program, the dean of Tehran Medical Sciences University said, “In some hospitals, we have over 100-150 coronavirus patients every day. Consider the pressure it is bringing on our medical staff who are tired from the eight-month outbreak and sickness. Our hospitals and medical sciences universities are in a state of war.”

Massoud Yunesian, epidemiologist at Tehran University, said, “If the current situation persists, the number of daily deaths will reach 800, more than four times what it already is.”

The semi-official ISNA news agency quoted the dean of Isfahan Medical Sciences University as saying, “Given the increase in the number of critical patients, the death toll might double or triple in the next weeks, which will turn the situation into a disaster. Isfahan is in a critical state and there are no clean regions in the province. In the past few days, the number of ICU patients has surpassed 250, and we need more beds. We have limited ICU specialists, and many of them have contracted the virus. Those who are still healthy are very tired, and the increase in the number of ICU patients is increasing their workload. Since the beginning of the outbreak, the average number of daily hospitalized patients was 146. Last week, this average reached 312 and there was a long queue of patients at the hospitalization section of public hospitals. We had to put some of private clinics in the coronavirus response cycle. Very soon, the situation we’re seeing in public hospitals will repeat itself in private hospitals.”

The spokesperson of the health ministry in Eastern Azerbaijan said, “Since mid-July, we’ve seen a rise in the number of patients in the province, and this trend continues. The number of cases and deaths is higher than the national average. There are 1,110 hospitalized patients in the province, and 235 are in ICU.”

In Razavi Khorasan, the public relations manager of Sabzevar Medical Sciences University said, “In the past two weeks, 57 students, teachers, and school workers in Sabzevar and other counties covered by the medical sciences university of this county have contracted Covid-19, and the number of patients entering hospitals has increased. The number of hospitalized patients has also increased considerably.” (Source: Javan Daily, October 4)

The manager of the civil defense organization of Zanjan province declared new restrictions in red counties of the province and said that schools and universities will hold their classes online for a week, as reported by Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC).
