Time and again, and once again two days ago, Deputy Health Minister Iraj Harirchi had said “coronavirus deaths consists of 19 to 20 percent of the country’s total daily death statistics,” according to a September 28 piece published in the state-run Entekhab daily.

All the while, director of the Tabriz Cemetery Organization in northwest Iran said to the regime’s official IRNA news agency on Wednesday, “It has been three days that the number of Covid-19 fatalities are more than those dying of other reasons.”

“If conditions continue as we speak, we will not be able to control the coronavirus crisis,” said Zahra Sheikhi, spokesperson for the Majlis (parliament) Health Commission on Tuesday. “Tehran, our index in the fight against Covid-19, is the worst hit area. Decisions are usually vetoed by various ministries and officials. This has resulted in an increasing spread of the virus and further pressure on our medical professionals,” she added, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

“The status quo in Tehran is so critical that if social restrictions and preventive measures are not imposed, in the coming week we will be witnessing hospital hallways being filled with Covid-19 patients,” said Masoud Mardani, a member of the National Covid-19 Task Force on Wednesday. “The number of people hospitalized, new cases and deaths in Tehran have increased significantly and hospitals can barely accept new patients who are in dire conditions. There are no more beds left for Covid-19 patients in our medical centers. We should anticipate harsh days for our medical professionals and an increase in the death toll. We should also expect Tehran, as the epicenter of the Covid-19 outbreak, to be shut down for a week,” he added, according to ISNA.

“Two thousand individuals in various Municipality branches have contracted Covid-19 ever since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of people contracting the virus in the Municipality is on the rise,” said a senior Tehran Municipality official on Tuesday, according to the semi-official ILNA news agency.

“Conditions in Lorestan province are very poor. The increase in the number of new cases began in late August and without a doubt there will be more in October,” said the dean of Lorestan Medical Sciences University on Tuesday. “The average number of positive Covid-19 tests in Lorestan has reached around 50 percent. We are conducting 700 to 750 Covid-19 tests across the province among individuals with suspicious symptoms, of which 300 to 350 cases are positive. Of the 576 hospital beds allocated to Covid-19 patients in this province, 123 are ICU beds and they are nearly always full,” he added, according to ILNA.

“The increasing trend of this illness is continuous, and it is concerning in some cities, including Saqqez, Baneh, Bijar and Sanandaj. The third Covid-19 peak in Kurdistan [province] will have a high death toll and we will be having a catastrophe if the epidemic is not controlled,” said the deputy dean of Kurdistan Medical Sciences University on Wednesday, according to the Mehr news agency, an outlet linked to the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).
