“Based on confirmed reports, in the past 24 hours we have had 3712 new Covid-19 cases. This is the highest number of new cases in one day since the novel coronavirus pandemic began seven months ago,” said the spokesperson of the regime’s Health Ministry on Tuesday. “3922 patients are in dire conditions and under care,” she added. These numbers are unprecedented in the past 40 days.

“In some areas we are witnessing new outbursts of Covid-19 and a third wave of this illness in various parts of the country,” said Health Minister Saied Namaki on Tuesday, according to the Tasnim news agency, an outlet affiliated to the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Quds Force.

The state-run Shabakeyeh Khabar aired a report on Monday, in which deputy health minister Iraj Harirchi said, “We are faced with a catastrophe. In May, we had 16 hospitalized patients in Qom every week. Last week, we had 531. In Tehran, we had 385 hospitalized patients in mid-May. Last week, we had 2,330. And this trend continues. In Isfahan and Eastern Azerbaijan, it’s the same situation. In other provinces, there’s an upward slope. Since deaths figures are correlated to the hospitalization figures, the trend of more than a thousand deaths per week sill continue… and these are just registered deaths… Our weekly hospitalized cases have reached 9,640 while in February and March, the outbreak’s peak, it was 7,900, and in May, it had reached 1,971. Unfortunately, our hospitalized cases have quintupled.”

According to the state-run ILNA news agency, Alireza Zali, the head of Tehran’s Coronavirus Task Force said, “The difference between the third wave and previous waves is that the ratio of hospitalized patients to non-hospitalized cases is growing, and the number of hospitalized patients in treatment facilities has also increased. Also, the number of patients who are hospitalized in ICU sections has increased. Some of the restrictions that were previously imposed must be reimposed in Tehran. We need more restrictions.”

The caretaker of Alborz Medical Sciences University said, “Since yesterday, 105 coronavirus patients were hospitalized. Unfortunately, in the past 24 hours, 12 patients have lost their lives and the total deaths in the province have reached 1,100.” (Source: ISNA, September 22)

The deputy dean of Western Azerbaijan Medical Sciences University said, “In Urmia, we are under a lot of pressure and the number of cases and hospitalized patients is increasing. Currently, a part of the Khomeini hospital has been allocated to coronavirus patients. The capacity of Taleghani hospital has been completely filled. We are in a critical situation and the city’s hospitals including Arefian, Artesh, and other hospitals must become engaged in the effort. The number of hospitalized patients has increased by a factor of 1.5 in comparison to July.” (Source: Mehr News Agency, September 22)

The dean of Qom Medical Sciences University said, “The situation in Qom has become super-red since September 10, and we are witnessing an increase in patients held at hospitals. It has been decided to accept Covid-19 patients in Imam Reza hospital starting from September 22.” (Source: IRNA, September 22)
