12,000 Iraqi jurists support PMOI

On January 31, 2006, at a press conference in Baghdad, the Independent Iraqi Jurists Society released an announcement signed by 12,000 Iraqi jurists in support of People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran to Arab and international media.
Indicating to legal arguments proposed by prominent Iraqi lawyers as well as international jurists to mention Lord Slynn, the former Judge of the European Court of Justice and the distinguished jurist from the UK, and Professor Sharif Bassiouni, head of ‘International Institute of high studies on Criminal Science’, 12,000 Iraqi jurists and lawyers stressed on legal insubstantiality of the terrorist accusations and while emphasizing on  contradiction of this designation with European law and international humanitarian law called for delisting PMOI in EU and US.
The signatories of the announcement which included more than 55 judges,  most prominent members of Iraqi Bar Association and Iraqi Jurists Union and more than 15,00 Iraqi woman lawyers from across Iraq, reiterated:
Terror label against PMOI has also deprived us from a cultural and political barricade against terrorism and fundamentalism along with a vital counter balance against religious fascism ruling Iran that is after nuclear weapon. Suppression and labeling this legitimate opposition provides an open hand for the Iranian regime and its exported terrorists to meddle in Iraq and slaughter innocent people as well as anti-fundamentalist and secular factions and personalities.
