Republic of Czechoslovakia was born

In the 6th and 7th centuries the Slovak immigrants mixed with other races such as the Selnics and Germans and resided in the region currently known as Slovakia while Slovakians themselves were residing in Bohemia and Moravia. The two races were united under the emperorship of Moravia in the 7th century and became Christians. After the fall of this emperorship in the 10th century, the Slovakians became part of the Bohemian kingdom consisting of the Czechs and Hungarian kingdoms. Vigorous religious fights in the Czech lands erupted in the 14th century. During the implosion of Bohemian kingdom, the Czechs along with Slovakians were dominated by foreigners and became a part of the Austria-Hungarian Empire.
After World War I and the disintegration of that empire, Czechoslovakia gained independence on November 14, 1918 and Thomas Masaryk who had established a local government since 1914 became the president.
This country was dissolved into two countries in 1990, forming the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The Czech Republic is a member of European Union with Prague as its capital.
The economy has been privatized since the collapse of communism and is now largely market-oriented. The Czech Republic is a multiparty republic with two legislative houses; its head of state is the president, and the prime minister leads the government.
The former Czechoslovakia came under the domination of the Soviet Union after World War II, ruled by a communist government from 1948 to 1989. Its growing political liberalization was suppressed by a Soviet invasion in 1968. After communist rule collapsed in 1989–90, separatist sentiments emerged among the Slovaks and in 1992 the Czechs and Slovaks agreed to break up their federated state. On Jan. 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia was peacefully dissolved and replaced by two new countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with the region of Moravia remaining in the former. In the late 1990s the Czech Republic started membership talks with the European Union, and in 1999 it entered NATO.
