Demise of Ayatollah Taleghani, the true spirit of Iran’s 1979 revolution

-On September 19, 1979, Ayatollah Taleghani, the true spirit of Iran’s anti-monarchy revolution passed away after 40 years of struggle against dictatorship and tyranny, and tolerating exile and imprisonment during these times. He started his struggle in his adolescence duringthe reign of Shah’s father and continued in Shah’s era and was always a vanguard in the people’s front against dictatorship and reactionary religion. He was arrested, imprisoned and exiled several times. The most perilous period of his life was certainly his life’s final years in confronting religious dictatorship and defending PMOI members against the blatant enmity of Khomeini and his advocates. While Khomeini hideously called PMOI members as hypocrites, Ayatollah Taleghani regarded them as faithful followers of The Quran and admired them in a statement:
“They were stars who shined in the darkness, Hanifnejad, Badizadegan, Askarizadeh, Meshkinfam, Sadegh. They paved the way for struggle for freedom. God bless them.”
